Aside from the brave translations and the broad influence, there are strangely few artistic interprestations of the poem itself. We see Dante's influence in so much and in so many. Perhaps people are just afraid to approach it.

I should take up reading Dante again - never got passed Inferno. It's not a light read. By the way, St Thomas Aquinas largely inspired Dante's poetry.

Quite so indeed. Hell and heaven even still are considered "taboo" topics of a sort. Heck even 15 years ago games like Dungeon's and Dragons were branded "Unholy" because they simply mentioned the idea of demons and everyone flipped out over it. I personally think it's an amazing (but someone biased in the catholic's favour)story and would like to see someone write a modern day version with the circles of hell related to "true sins" and exclude the limbo and heresy parts of the poems.
Yeah but that's the ... ( 13 hours ago by MSeigeMalicious)
Yeah but that's the problem isn't it. It's because people catholic that they fear hell. In reality do you really think god cares about half the crap we do that are considered "Immoral". I mean cmon, how is sex wrong? How is not following the catholics but still believing in god wrong? It's selfish and god if such a being exists would be pissed off that his image is being smirched by a bunch of uppity clergyman intent on spreading their religion like a plague. It's mind control and brainwashing.
Many works have ... ( 10 hours ago by dantealatar)
Many works have inspired Dante's poetry more or less and in turn. Virgil's Aeneid, Ovid's Metamorphoses, Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, Aquinas' Summa Theologica, Boethius's De consolatione philosophiae and Cicero's De amicitia were some of the works he read, but also his the fellow poets in the Dolce Stil Novo school played a part. Mostly Guinizzelli and Cavalcanti.
