I think it is ... ( 7 months ago by Borbuster)
I think it is partly a nod to programming languages that start from 0, but also because freedom 0 is such a trivial freedom that even non-free software can provide.
This is so wrong. ... ( 6 months ago by id1337x)
This is so wrong. Richard Stallman does more then talk (in multiple languages). Richard Stallman was an operating systems developer at MIT, he programmed the GCC, Emacs, and much more. He is an expert with Lisp and he worked on the Lisp machine operating system. There is so much more that he did.

If you are a hacker why didn't you solve the problem?
Why wouldn't you post on a forum for the product you were having trouble with? Your argument is weak...there is nothing wrong with not knowing the answer. In fact, it takes an honest person to give it to you straight like that, and admit he/she does not know something. All you have done is sho
wn your lack of motivation and pressence of an ego. Your rouse is mindless, meaningless, and childish.

I stand corrected. ... ( 6 months ago by BitstreamHacker)
I stand corrected. I was quite put off by the brevity of his email response. So brief in fact, it was bordering on being brusque.
Despite the fact that he was unable to answer my question (which I've since found out, is not an easy one to answer), I do now acknowledge he has accomplished much and I may have written those words in haste. I guess I was just put off.

Which are the benefits of the software free for a programmer? If the software is free how a developer can survive?

Various- the programmer may have a day job like be a web developer or have a non-programming job. The emphasis though is on "open source" and not how the developers earn a living.
Stallman is a ... ( 5 months ago by zoldello)
Stallman is a genius but I think he has lost touch of reality living in "free software land ". Yeah, free software is cool and yada yada yada... How many of you readers know how to modify source code? And the ones that do, how many have the time to? Lets say the open source application meets your needs so no modification is need... Haha! There is tech support. I believe open source to Stallman's extend is great for small developer groups. But its it bad for the general public.
there's no need to ... ( 4 months ago by Huakalero)
there's no need to know how to modify the code. If you really need it to be modified you can hire a programmer to do it, paying well, they will effort on making it according to your needs, that's how it works, little modifications dont need too much time.

free software means that software you get for free (in my opinion) what he's talking about is open-source (again, in my opinion

The word of ... ( 4 months ago by lukepatmore)
The word of righteousness shineth forth amongst the black voids of crippled computing rights. Saint Ignucious is the brilliant father of the movement that shall set all computer users free from DRM, non-free software, and treacherous computing. I implore ye to cleave to what is right, do not be swayed by convenience, do not fall to the level of Venom Incarnate (VI), and do not be seduced be MS Word, the scarlet woman of Babylon. Be free, end user and programmers alike, BE FREE!

I believe there are better justifications for why average users benefit may from free software. Free software is capable of a more intrinsic usage, than proprietary software. Since money is rarely required to make free software better, the target audience may integrate far more easily.

of course there are better justifications i was only responding to zoldello question, about who can modify a code, and who has the time to do it. Free software involves a new way of seeing things, propietary software always require money to survive so it damages the etic of world, entering on a fight of who can make the best software in the shortest time, free software involves an age of sharing for the comunity, and as one fight for world development
most of people ... ( 3 months ago by BSzili)
most of people misunderstand these "open source" thing. even if you aren't a programmer, you can benefit from it, because everybody can modify the source code. bugs can be fixed more quickly, the new relases are more frequent, and etc. and if you have a problem, you don't have to rely on a company's tech support. anyone who knows the program's source can help you. whoah, maybe i become too RMS-ish :DD

You already have freedom. The freedom to use Proprietary and Free software. You can use either to create YOUR OWN programs, and do with them whatever you wish. Don't listen to this fat, disgusting, dirty hobo, who really only cares about one thing: his crusade. He has no wife (ever) and no children (ever), but attacks those who DO care about these things.

Free software should give anyone the freedom to do anything with it. Free doesn't have to have anything to do with money.
