Helicopter Accident

Uploaded by: scottuh1
Video Stream Description:
This is a Turbine Enstrom Helicopter on the Heli Pad of a Greenpeace ship some where off the coast of Ireland. One of the deck straps has not been released correctly, with what was very nearly disastrous consequence. Pilot skill and quick thinking saved the day.

It was the pilots ... ( 1 day ago by PorkyPiggles)
It was the pilots fault to start with. He should not have been producing lift whilst the heli was still tethered. Essentially he made the heli lighter and the ship was able to throw the heli up in the air as the stern rose. His reaction wasn't so fast, he didn't know to power down immediately. The volunteer deck-hand didn't realise that there was a rear tether and had to go back and undo it. Amateur Greenpeace, they won't be showing this on their recruitment video.

Im sure that pilot never flew for the U.S. military or else he would have been totally observant of the deck hands cue singles to him and one another; but then again, the deck hands have no kind training to communicate the required hand signals. Plenty of us on this comment post would have done a way more successful unrigging launch than those. They arent even harnessing any life jackets.

They were still unrigging it, the pilot didnt try and take off. Because he had the rotor running it made the chopper super light and when the ship dipped the chopper just stayed in the same spot then got pulled back down

What sort of training do you need to go through to become a helicoter pilot? I mean in general, not just for Greenpeace.

well that's what you get from working for greanpeace. their just a bunch of idiots trying to save the earth, well it can't be saved... :P

Any well trained heli pilot would know to "negatively" swash-plate the rotor pitch, effectively holding the copter down onto the pad, no matter how high the stern or aft bounce.
Because you wouldnt ... ( 21 hours ago by doggsho)
Because you wouldnt want to first unrig the craft on the open ocean, then waiting for lift speed, its imperative that you have those rotors primed up so as not take all day for lift-off.

You can't apply ... ( 14 hours ago by hbpfly)
You can't apply negitave pitch - only neuteral or positive. In some helicopters if you apply neg pitch in flight, you will lose the rotor head. This might work in RC models, but not in real life.

Fuck Greenpeace, and anyone associated with them. Great recovery by the pilot though, and that deck hand is one severely lucky individual. Hopefully the incident brings a self realization that he is wasting his life.
