Making software takes only time. Manufacturing cost is 0. Than free copies are sold.
Making hardware takes time, there are manufacturing costs and than each piece has to be made again. That's worth money. Any commercial software is worth few $ at most or as with free software (often better) you donate how much you think it's worth.

I really like Mojo. It's a program that acts like a messaging agent, but instead of talking to people, you can look into their iTunes library and download any song you want. As long as it's not protected by iTunes.
