George talks about this film in 'Gracie: A Love Story.' He says, "Someone later told me that that short was avant-garde. I told them I didn't think so, I thought it was pretty funny." It was the first of 14 that they did in the next two years. Thanks for posting! It's a great look at what audiences flocked to the Palace to see in its heyday.

According to George (in another of his memoirs), Fred Allen was supposed to star in this "Vitaphone Varieties" short, but couldn't. George & Gracie literally filled in for him at the last minute- Allen's story was supposed to take place in somebody's living room, so George came up with the idea of he and Gracie "looking for the audience" around the room to establish the start of their routine. Note George never takes off his hat; he didn't even have time to wear his toupee before filming began!

aww! they are both so sweet and cute and young and romantic here. I LOVE the song and dance part at the end. thats an element that wasnt really repeated that way in the acutal Burns and Allen show, which was also brilliant

That was great!!! Years ago I saw a short where Gracie was a clerk in an unbreakable vase shop and George the customer.... Anybody post that one?

Actually, in the book George says that the 9 minute short they did in Fred Allen's place started and ended with him saying they were earning $1800 for the film, and it started with Gracie looking for the audience, not the two of them. This must be one of the ones they were contracted for afterwards afterwards.
