To do this without editing the registry.... - Follow the steps in this video to edit explorer.exe. - Save and name whatever you'd like - reboot pc, keep pressing the F8 key right away, when the pc starting up, to load boot options menu - choose safe mode with command prompt, log in. - type: cd "c:\windows" (or path to windows installation) ren explorer.exe, explorer.bax ren explorer_THE_ONE_YOU_EDITED.exe explorer.exe shutdown /r /t 0 Keep in mind some windows updates will wipe this setting.

Your files are never lost unless your hd is fully dead or you personally overwrote them with new files. All that happened in your case, was an improper configuration, or a corrupt edit of explorer.
