I would go with RET in a second, but they are way over my budget.. have you seen the Alesis USB drum Pro coming out? looks pretty good for a great price
Well, if you've ... ( 3 months ago by MikeyVPT)
Well, if you've already got a Roland, you could midi out of that into your computer to trigger drum software...
Or you could sell that and get an Alesis Trigger IO for $149. RET Percussion has been doing that for forever, and you can see from my vids that it works awesomely. -mikey

USB kits??? what are you talking about? care to elaborate a little?
The USB drum kits ... ( 3 months ago by MikeyVPT)
The USB drum kits from Alesis. They don't work well at all! ESPECIALLY with the kind of software that they're trying to push.
I mean, if you're gonna go with software for e-drumming, you might as well get a kit that was designed for Virtual Percussion, ya know? RET kits are tried and true. I will say that the price for the Alesis USB drums is great... but you get what you pay for, know what I mean? -mikey

Again mikey your going to have to be a little more specific? what do you mean they dont work well?
You hit the drum set, and the Alesis Trigger IO transmits midi data to a computer? R.E.T already uses the Trigger IO for their drums, so that cant be what your talking about. The Surge cymbals are proven to be highly responsive, so that cant be what your talking about. So that leaves you with the
drum set itself. So what exactly is the problem with the set?
If your complaint ... ( 3 months ago by pistolpete198069)
If your complaint is that it is not built as sturdy or robust as the R.E.T kits, then im with you. But for a fraction of the cost of an RET with ALL of the functionality, and my budget. This is great deal.
For most of us that will be using a drum set to trigger samples, it will just be to lay down tracks, not intensive daily drumming. I think they are the perfect solution. But I'll have to wait a few more weeks before the final verdict.. I'll keep you posted.

"I mean, if you're gonna go with software for e-drumming, you might as well get a kit that was designed for Virtual Percussion, ya know?"
I think im begining to see where the confusion lies. The Alesis USB drum Pro was designed specifically as a VST trigger. You are probably thinking im refering to the Alesis DM5 Pro. Type in youtube "alesis usb drum pro" unless you were at Namm 2008, you didnt try them
Array ( 3 months ago by MikeyVPT)
Pete,
I don't mean to be so... confrontational... It's just that I WAS at NAMM this year, and I DID try them. When I say they weren't made for software, I more or less mean that they are clones of RET. I feel like Alesis made this drum set with those cymbals just to follow suit. For the price, it's
a "steal". I guess it's the name of the game to "borrow" ideas from other companies. Like I said, I played them, while shaking my head as to why the drums didn't trigger well.

well its not being confrontational. debate is good, thats how people get to hear ideas.
I know that you are a big supporter of R.E.T from your videos. and I woudl be too if i could afford one lol As for the Alesis drum set being a clone of R.E.T I dont believe so, Remember it was Alesis that created the Trigger IO, that enabled R.E.T to create drum sets that interface with VST's.
Bottom line is this ... ( 3 months ago by pistolpete198069)
Bottom line is this, There is a market out there for both companies. The Alesis Drum Pro is great for studio use laying down some tracks, but I dont believe it is road worthy. As for R.E.T their sets are very durable and made for Live and repetitive use.
But once again I'll have to wait a couple of weeks before I can determine they are as bad as you say. But judging from the videos on youtube, the response so far has been great. and your opinion is suspectly biased lol
Three things: I ... ( 3 months ago by MikeyVPT)
Three things: I agree-debate is good! I don't take things personally when discussing opinions. I'm glad we're both on the same page :-) Also, Alesis didn't enable RET to do the VPT thing. RET did it since drum software came out... with a Roland module! Alesis just offered a MUCH less expensive option! Third, I have no doubt the Alesis drums will work, but their offering at NAMM was bad. I don't really have a lot of money to throw around, but I take my musical endeavors very seriously.

We'll I respect your opinion, and I will take note. But I'll have to wait and see to see how accurate your assesment of the kit was. Take Care!

People say that, but the way RET Percussion drums are made, they handle the positions very well!
I've used the TD-20, and was surprised, too, that I could get the alternative hits. Worth checking out. -mikey

The USB probally ... ( 4 weeks ago by bhoussock)
The USB probally does suck, but its a good idea if someone is buying the kit for drums only.. The trigger I/O that the Alesis USB kit comes with (also RET).. has an optional 9V AC adapter that you can buy for like $20 anywhere or from Alesis.. instead of powering the trigger I/O with USB.. but I would rather an acoustic set mic'd for studio drumming, but for the time being.. it has to be electric with EZ software.. and for $700, its a great deal for the Alesis w/ Surge cymbals and the I/O.
