I have listened to his recordings, especially those in which he plays Chopin's nocturnes. He is unsurpassable, but age is very noticeable in the tempo of this performance. I have no doubts his output and style are unrivalled today, but in this recording...mm...time caught up with him.
Still, it is very rare to see two giants together in the same performance of a composition--putting Toscanini to conduct while Paderewsky plays Chopin's first.
Lovers of the lofty and refined will cherish this.

Thanks for sharing, and I love Aurrau's musicianship, inspiring even that age, but watching the orchestra and conductor is rather uninspiring. Colin Davis looks so .... square. I am going to compare this performance with the one in Arrau's native Chile. Anyone else done it?

...ya,but the inspiration and the deepness of musicality,my goshh,those things re very remarkable,of course he hasnt got the power of an 30 yo man but nonetheless the standard of technique is unique,he still plays in a way stainless:the clarity of his sound,and his fingers re still pretty alive:-)--->in a word,although the tempo and the attacking impulses re reduced,it

Beethoven was the master. His music takes you on great journeys without bounds or limits. I guess that's what is so great about classical music. Since there's no lyrics, your mind kind of imagines a story to go along with it. At least, that's how I see it.

Oh, well personally I hate it, as well as all of Mozart's piano concertos. I find Rachmaninov's piano concertos to be waaaayy better. And Sergei Prokofiev's, and Khachaturian's and Shostakovich's and all the other late romantic and 20th Century Russian Piano concertos. I do not see any beauty in the piece, or anything else from that era.

I don't know much of Beethovens music but concerning the pieces I know (5th, 7th, 9th symphony, Fidelio, 5th piano concerto) I don't like Karajan as Beethoven conductor. I prefer Kleiber and Bernstein.
